About the Game

In Harmonies, build landscapes by placing colored tokens and create habitats for your animals. To earn the most points and win the game, incorporate the habitats in your landscapes wisely and have as many animals as you can settle there. Harmonies

Harmonies charmed me from the first play. It’s a gorgeous game – the chunky terrain tokens and the lovely animal artwork really pop on the table, making my little ecosystem look like a piece of art by the end. The gameplay itself is pleasantly thoughtful. It’s easy to learn: each turn you just take a trio of tokens and place them on your board, maybe grab an animal card, and you’re off. But oh boy, making those tokens work together is a fun puzzle. I was constantly debating, “Do I use these tokens to build a tall tree for points, or spread them out to complete a pattern for an animal card?” There are layers of scoring (literally, with stacking tokens!) and it kept me engaged trying to maximize everything. It’s mostly a personal puzzle – I was in my own world building a habitat, occasionally glancing at what my friends were doing but not really interfering with them. That makes it a relaxing experience, though I suppose if you want more direct competition, Azul or something would scratch that itch better. We played two games back-to-back because we enjoyed it so much, and even my friends who prefer heavier games appreciated it as a lighter strategic filler. I also gathered that sentiment from other players’ opinions via an AI summary – lots of love for Harmonies’ blend of simplicity and depth. This one hits a high note for me at 9/10.

✓ Pros

  • Beautiful components and table presence
  • Easy rules but plenty of strategic decisions
  • Satisfying pattern-building and puzzle-like gameplay

✗ Cons

  • Very low player interaction (multiplayer solitaire feel)
  • Market of tokens/cards can stagnate occasionally
  • Scoring has many elements, which can feel a bit point-salady
