Everdell

Everdell enchanted me from the moment I saw its beautiful artwork and the 3D tree on the table. It’s the rare game that both looks gorgeous and offers satisfying gameplay to match. I love building up my little critter city through the seasons – there’s something so pleasant about placing a rabbit or hedgehog worker to gather berries, then playing a card like the Inn or the Husband & Wife pair to combo off each other. The engine-building in Everdell starts simple and ramps up nicely; by autumn I often have a bustling town and plenty of clever card synergies firing off. The game strikes a nice balance where it’s easy to learn but still gives me a lot to ponder each turn. There is some luck of the draw, and I’ve had games where I just couldn’t find the card I needed for a big combo (while someone else drew perfectly). That can be a bit frustrating in an otherwise gentle game. Also, that big tree, while pretty, can block visibility for players sitting in the wrong spot. Minor quibbles aside, Everdell remains one of my most beloved games for its charm and solid gameplay.

✓ Pros

  • Stunning artwork and table presence
  • Engaging engine-building gameplay
  • Easy to learn yet still strategic

✗ Cons

  • Card draw luck can impact plans
  • Low player interaction
  • 3D tree can obstruct view
